The story of Ligeia is about a dark and mysterious woman who the narrator falls in love with. She is beautiful, intelligent and passionate. Throughout the novel she is depicted as having a secret kept behind her eyes, the secret is that of eternal life. She is portrayed as the evil inside of people, the darkness deep within. After Ligeia dies, the narrator remarries Lady Rowena who is the opposite of Ligeia. She is blonde, fair skinned and kind. One day Lady Rowena becomes ill only a month after she is married, her soul has been taken over by Ligeia. Ligeia has come back from the dead to kill the new wife of her husband.

"Im beauty of face no maiden ever equalled her...It might have been, too, that in these eyes of my beloved lay the secret." Ligeia was a a beautiful woman, with long curly, dark hair, with intelligence equal to that of a man. Her husband (the narrator) was obsessed with her, but he did not know much about her, nor even her full name. This image shows how Ligeia is above him and how he is kneeling next to her trying to please her. The look on his face is one of worry, as if he is hoping he is making her happy. Ligeia has a hard face, with dark eyes and dark hais, she is looking down upon him as if he does not even exist. In the top right corner is a faint image of an angel. This angel can be depicted as Lady Rowena, the narrators second wife. She is portrayed as an angel because she was the complete opposite of Ligeia and was kind.

This image is depicting the dark vs. evil concept, the concept of the devil vs. the angel. Ligeia is seen as the dark character in the book by Poe, she is depicted with dark features and a mysterious background with eyes that hide a secret. "I lead to the alter as my bride--as the sucessor of the unforgoten Ligeia--the fair haired and blue-eyed Lady Rowena Trevanion." The women not only differ in looks and character but their husband views them differently as well. Ligeia the dark/evil character is loved by her husband but the light/good Lady Rowena is despised by him.
